The UK Business Community
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the UK economy. Behind every SME is an entrepreneur who dared to take the leap and build their dream business. Entrepreneurs are critical to the positive economic development of the UK economy.
There are around 5.5 million SMEs in the UK, making up over 99% of all private sector businesses. These businesses employ approximately 16.7 million people, which is about 60–61% of all private sector employment, and generate nearly £2.8 trillion in turnover, accounting for more than half of the private sector’s total. Despite recent challenges, including economic uncertainty and global disruptions, entrepreneurship remains resilient.
For the UK economy to grow, new entrepreneurs need to be encouraged and supported to follow their ambitions.

If you were setting up a business now, what would you do first?
Today, I invest in leaders and their companies, helping them secure funding and providing coaching. The first thing I look for is a killer idea, but more importantly, a strong leader to bring that idea to market. The idea should be easy to understand, if I can grasp it, so can the market. We don’t need to be first, but we need to be the best.
